Two Sundays ago saw the return of “Doc Martin”, to the 42″ HD tv of Professor Nick. Apart from being a big Martin Clunes fan, the series has a special place in the heart of the prematurely grey-haired Head of School.
Over the summer, Prof. Nick and family hoofed it down to Port Isaac in North Cornwall, where the series is filmed. Port Isaac is an unspoilt old fishing village, free of cars but yet full of activity.
Prof. Nick stayed in the “Slipway Hotel”, which is often in view in the programme as are many other of the vistas seen below.
If you are holidaying in England, Port Isaac is a must to see…….

Above is the slipway down to the water seen nearly every week in the programme.
Below is the view from the bottom of the slipway towards the harbour.

Port Isaac itself is full of narrow and picturesque alleyways, below on the left hand side is the bar featured:

Here is the view from the “School House” which in last week’s episode, seemed to be run by a oddball Headmaster..

Finally, below is The “Slipway Hotel” – Prof. Nick did not manage to meet resident Doc Martin – they had just finished filming…. – of all the luck.

Over the Summer vacation, the School of Dentistry was represented at an international exhibition in Singapore – Donna Bailey and Margaret Stockberger took some snaps of their sojourn.
The School has just started two new dedicated online programmes; a Masters degree in Dental Public Health (MDPH) and a Masters degree in Research in Dental Public Health (MRes) which start in October – more details can be found on our School website:
http://www.dentistry.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/
In addition to the above programmes, the Schol of Dentistry and Health Care Learning (Smile-on) Company Ltd., have joined forces to provide an innovative, technology driven MSc in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. This new part-time course is the UK’s first online post graduate degree in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry.
This programme is more than just an online learning experience. Students will be able to communicate with a diverse multi-ethnic global community of peers with whom they will also share residential get-togethers in fantastic settings around the world..
For more information about the course starting in January 2010, and to apply online, please go to Smile-on’s web page at http://msc.smile-on.com/ or to the School’s website at http://www.dentistry.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/msc_restorative/

Our stand generated interest from people from around 42 countries!

The team had some time to relax and take in the idyllic setting……

As the new term starts, it is back to normal welcoming our new postgraduates to Manchester.

The third, fourth and fifth years were treated to a lecture by Laura Thompson and Susie Sanderson form the BDA today. Laura is the Student Marketing Executive for the BDA and I am sure very familiar to all the students by now and has appeared on this blog before!
Susie Sanderson is a GDP working in Sheffield but also a very important person in the BDA and the dental profession being the current chair of the BDA’s Executive committee.

Susie presented an excellent talk about the challenges and opportunities that face today’s dentists especially the newly qualified ones. Rather self-effacing, she claimed to be not as bright as the students of today and revealed the grades she was offered for a place at Manchester Dental School in the 1970s – I wont embarrass her telling you what they were, ask someone who was there! Susie stressed that the current students will all be future leaders of the profession whether that be leading their dental team locally or heading up an international association.
The BDA works for all dentists in the UK whether they are members or not but with as many people are members as possible, the association will have more resource to ensure dentists are represented both in our country and increasingly across Europe. The BDA is one of the few organisations that is able to have a regular dialogue with the political powers that govern our country.
One point Susie did make, that I strongly endorse, is to make sure you do more than work the treadmill five or more days a week in practice. Getting involved with one of the many other areas of activity available in dentistry can still be work but something quite different. A change is often as a break! That is one reason why so many general dental practitioners give up their days in lucrative practice to come to teach students. But you could also find yourself working for the BDA in some way by attending a branch or section meeting, becoming a member of one of the many committees or even one day chairing one of them and having regular meetings with Chief Dental Officers or MPs!
A big thanks to Susie and Laura for supporting the school and the free lunch they provided for the students (in the common room upstairs in Coupland, nice carpet!).
Yesterday saw the release of A level results – a nerve racking time for all concerned. Our admissions team have worked non-stop and I very much look forward to welcoming our new intake to our School. This will be a new chapter in the lives of our budding Dentists and Dental Therapists and the start of what I hope will be a fantastic journey for them.
All of the School looks forward to making their time with us special and in particular, making them very welcome.
Nick Grey
Head of School of Dentistry

It is the middle of August and our brand new chairs have arrived and nearly ready for the new term!
